A Salute to Veterans

November8

Veterans Day is an official United States holiday honoring the men and women who have served in our military forces.

Observed on November 11th, this federal holiday coincides with other events, such as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world.

With that said, if you are looking for lesson plans, videos, facts and/or student activities related to the day we set aside to honor those who have sacrificed so much, check out the resources listed below:

» B-A Salutes Veterans – A video created by my Multimedia I students for our school-wide assembly program.

» U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – Provides three separate web pages with facts, activities and games devoted specifically to teaching students about veterans (Grades K-5), honoring America’s veterans (Grades 6-12), and veterans and patriotism (teacher resources).

» The History Channel – Fantastic information related to Veteran’s Day.

» ReadWriteThink – A wealth of classroom activities for Language Arts classes (i.e. a Veteran’s Day biographical poem), web sites and other related resources.

» The Best Websites To Learn About Veterans Day – The name says it all!

» Veteran’s Day Teacher Resource Guide – A document containing tons of information and activities for classroom use.

Classroom Connection: Use the resources and materials listed above to teach students about the importance of honoring the men and women who serve(d) in our nation’s armed forces.
