For the Love of a Dog: The Life Lessons I Learned from a Furbag Named Sawyer

October29

You were seized from a puppy mill after 5+ years of imprisonment in a wire cage. Frightened, filthy and full of disease and infection, you eventually recovered from the torture and neglect you endured as a result of greed and ignorance. You learned to run, to walk up and down stairs, to play, to do tricks, to drink water, to bark, to be a dog. You were even given a name to replace the number etched into the metal tag that hung from your tiny neck.

I found Sawyer at a local Humane Society in the same fragile state in which he left this world a few days ago. Despite the odds, he was given the chance to spend the last six years of his life feeling full, warm, safe and loved—really, really loved.

I already miss you punky, nutty buddy, my furbag. But I will always be grateful for the mix up that resulted in you being a significant part of my life. I may have rescued you, but you reciprocated in so many ways. Your super cute and cuddly but medically challenging being reinforced lessons in strength, trust, patience, selflessness and unconditional love.

Although I am beyond sad, I am also smiling because you are whole again and running wild and free in the sunshine! ♥

You might be wondering how the passing of my dog has anything to do with this edtech space… Well, to honor the impact Sawyer’s life had on mine, I’ve decided to create a few items that will be a testament to the legacy he left behind. For starters, I am currently developing a Breakout EDU game entitled “Sawyer’s Purpose” which will be based on friendship and unconditional love. In addition, I plan to write a children’s book about his journey and the lessons learned from it. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of these projects…

Gone from this life but never absent from my heart. Until we meet at the Rainbow Bridge…
