Cool Tools for the 21st Century Classroom

Guanajuato: The Journey Continues

June15

The second stop on our adventure to Guanajuato, Mexico was a very special one: Penjamo Prepa! Not only did we have the chance to connect with the English teachers and principal Jesus Lugo Martinez over an amazing lunch, but we were able to meet the Director of Schools (Superintendent), Ricardo Gomez—a kind and wonderful man with a huge heart. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these educators and touring their facilities. The pride they showed in regards to their school, community and culture was immediately apparent as was their appreciation for our willingness to work together and learn from one another to accomplish a common goal: To provide the best 21st Century education possible for all students touched by this international exchange.

As one might guess, in order to develop an educational program such as the one that now exists between Penn State University, Bellwood-Antis High School and Guanajuato University, policies and procedures must be established. However, more important than guidelines and paperwork are the relationships that need to be built among those responsible for carrying out the mission. As a result of one afternoon in this prepa, we are well on our way!

Of course, a visit to Penjamo would not be complete without a trip to the Hacienda de Corralejo.  In addition to producing the most famous tequila in the state of Guanajuato, this site is the actual birthplace of Don Miguel Hidalgo, the father of Mexico. What a beautiful and interesting landmark! The architecture, glass and stone—total coolness!

Many thanks to all of the people of Penjamo for providing us with a very unique experience!
