Cool Tools for the 21st Century Classroom

Hashtag Humor

February10

So, I saw this cartoon on the Teaching Ideas Facebook page this morning and I cracked up. For one, it’s just funny—and of course, oh, so true. I mean, let’s face it: Many of the digital natives (students) in our classrooms are just about as clueless about the parts of speech as most of the digital immigrants (teachers) are when it comes to the social media tools.

Secondly, it’s a great follow-up for the Twitter blog post I wrote yesterday regarding the use of this tool for educational purposes. A 21st Century teaching and learning tool and an “old school” way of teaching grammar—two worlds collide. Yeah, you guessed it! I’m advocating developing an English lesson via tweets? Not impossible task! Think about the interactive, relevant learning that could take place!

As Rupert Murdoch once said, “We may never become true digital natives, but we can and must begin to assimilate to their culture and way of thinking.”

Well said! My advice? (In case you’re asking for it!) Why not join forces to capitalize on each group’s strengths to create an educational environment that takes everyone in the classroom setting to the next level! Just saying…
