Rock Your Science & Math Lessons with Study Jams
Back by popular demand—Study Jams, an online tool developed by Scholastic to assist elementary students with learning concepts such as volcanoes, fractions and decimals through animated videos, slide shows and songs.
Yep, in addition to jazzing up your science and math lessons, I have recently learned that teachers are now embedding Study Jams media into other web tools including Edmodo, blogs and websites. What a fabulous resource for flipped classrooms!
Besides each “jam”, users of this “cool tool” are also given a brief explanation of the topic and key vocabulary associated with the subject matter. What’s more—Study Jams includes a ”Test Yourself” section in which students can complete a check for understanding and then receive immediate feedback regarding their learning. Some topics even include lesson plans and teaching guides for educators.
Wanna sing along with Study Jams? Then be sure to check out the “Sing Karaoke” feature that accompanies each song!
Classroom Connection:
Utilize Study Jams to engage students in math and science content! Whether you’re introducing your class to a new concept and/or reinforcing skills, these resources can be used as excellent learning opportunities for students. Study Jams can be incorporated as an anticipatory set for whole class instruction, as formative assessments to guide instructional practices and/or for small group or independent learning.
Since Study Jams suggests related content associated with each topic, students who have already mastered skills can extend their learning by exploring additional “jams”. As an enrichment activity, students could be challenged to create their own Study Jams using a digital storytelling tool such as Domo Animate or Animoto.
