Cool Tools for the 21st Century Classroom

Oolone: Visual Search Engine

Resource:  Meet Oolone, a new visual search engine  to enter the Internet scene.  What sets Oolone apart from the more popular
search engines – Google, Bing and Yahoo – is that it displays its results  solely in the form of images as opposed to text.  That’s right!  Oolone actually generates snapshots  showing users entire web page previews that are available without having to actually click on the site itself.  These results are shown four slides at a time, but one can toggle through other pages to review additional information that is available on the topic selected.

Oolone also has a few filters that can be utilized to obtain more specific search results.  In addition to “News” and “Images”, there’s an adult filter that can be used to keep unwanted content from surfacing – a feature that is especially handy in the classroom.

Integration Ideas:  In terms of search engines, Google is still my personal favorite,  but if you’re looking for a way to maximize time in the computer lab with students, Oolone could be a useful tool for  you.  In addition to being able to sort through search results in a much quicker manner, the Oolone interface allows students to preview web pages to determine the likelihood a site that may be of benefit to them without having to leave the search results page.  Furthermore, the kind of visual results that Oolone can provide also has obvious advantages for English Language Learners and/or students who learn more effectively when the visible approach is an option.
