Cool Tools for the 21st Century Classroom

Flashcard Machine

April3

Flashcard Machine is an excellent (and free!) online study tool that enables users to create, study and/or share interactive web-based flash cards that can be created for a multitude of purposes. Images, audio and/or chemical formulas can even be incorporated into the flashcards—how cool is that?

Once a set of flashcards is created, users can engage in one or all four of the activities offered on the site: Study Session; Quiz Me; Review; or Print. Flashcard Machine allows teachers to create accounts for their students and/or they can utilize the “read access” option which makes cards available via a direct link associated with each flashcard set created.  (The latter choice does not require student registration.)

Registered users also have access to the Flashcard Machine database which contains over 60 million sets of flash cards in a wide variety of subject areas.

Oh—and in case you’re wondering… Yep, there’s an app for that!  Students can actually study flashcards on their favorite mobile device.  Visit the iTunes store to download the Flashcard Machine app for the iPhone, iPod touch and/or iPad.  Flashcard Machine can also be downloaded for an Android device in the Android Market as well.

Classroom Connection:

With Flashcard Machine, the possibilities are endless! This tool can be utilized across the curriculum in any content area and at any grade level to introduce, review and reinforce vocabulary, spelling words and/or course-related concepts. Because Flashcard Machine is a web-based application, it can be used during and after school hours; thus, making this a great tool to assist students with studying for upcoming quizzes/tests in class and at home. Students can also create their own flash cards that can be shared with teachers and classmates. In addition, with the capability of including visuals and sound, Flashcard Machine can be used to meet the needs of students with all learning styles.
