Guanajuato: The Final Destination
Our school visits concluded with a trip to Salvatierra—recognized as one of the most important and beautiful historical centers of the state of Guanajuato.
After touring the lush, tropical grounds of the prepa and adjacent hacienda also used for classes, we journeyed to a nearby park to enjoy an authentic Mexican barbeque. It was in this very place that we established friendships I feel will last a lifetime!
But the hospitality did not end there! “Cookies”, the principal of Salvatierra prepa, welcomed us into her home and family. After an evening of becoming better acquainted, we returned to school the next day to meet with our new friends—Ramon, Rocio, Alberto, Javier, Niko and Isaac—and many of the remaining faculty members to plan for our return trip in October. Before our departure, we were also treated to a tour of the city, homemade tequila ice cream, stuffed cactus—a local favorite—and lunch at a really neat restaurant in the city square.
A special shout out to “Cookies” for providing us with a wonderful home away from home! Your sweetness and generosity will not be forgotten! And let’s not forget Ramon—our personal guide, translator, protector and friend! Thank you for spending quality time with us, talking to us about how we can make a difference upon our return to Salvatierra prepa, and of course, for the laughs.
Our trip to this wonderful place concluded with a tapas dinner in Guanajuato. Not only did we have a spectacular view overlooking the city, but we got to spend one last evening with two people I have come to respect and admire—Laura and Carmen. Words cannot express how much I appreciate the role you both played in providing me with an experience that has truly enriched my life! Your hospitality as well as your dedication to your schools, students and community is second to none!
I’m really looking forward to your trip to the U.S. in July! ♥
