Guanajuato: Student Voices
Besides working on several tech-related projects throughout my educational trip to Guanajuato, Mexico, I had the chance to experience life in a variety of classrooms at the Salvatierra prepa—English, biology, art, music and even Zumba! (Yes, you read that correctly!)
All of these opportunities were very unique; however, one of my favorite activities was observing student presentations in Alberto Rojas’ classes—posters that were especially designed to share aspects of the Mexican culture with educators from Pennsylvania. We learned about history, food and the Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, a national holiday that focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember those who have died. Students also informed us about societal issues that were important to them such as the environment and responsible ownership of pets to name a few.
Not only were these projects very enlightening and interesting, but the artwork and creativity involved was phenomenal. Particularly impressive was the fact that the students communicated information to us in English. It was also really neat to witness how proud the students were of their community/country and its customs—a theme that was pervasive during this trip, regardless of where we visited and/or who we met.
Muchas gracias Alberto and his amazing students for inviting us to your classroom, making us feel welcome and most importantly, for sharing the “true colors” of Mexico with us—a side the rest of the world should learn about sooner than later! ♥
