New Series: Infographic of the Week

April23

I’m not sure how you could help but notice that infographics are everywhere these days. In fact, newspapers, magazines and the web is full of them. Lately I’ve seen so many of these cool images that it prompted me to begin a new weekly series of posts: Infographic of the Week. Why? Because there are tons of infographics that can be utilized in all classrooms across the K-12 curriculum.

So, what is an infographic anyway? Otherwise known as information graphics, these images are visual representations of information, data or knowledge. Infographics present complex information quickly and clearly. Examples include signs, maps, journalism, technical writing and education.

Check out this nifty infographic about infographics!

Classroom Connection:

The use of images to promote and support visual literacy is essential in education today. Because we—as a society—are inundated with pictures, graphics and symbols, it is important for students to be able to read and interpret these visual types of information. In addition, not only are charts, graphs and maps included on standardized tests of all kinds, but whiteboard technology has made the graphic depiction of information that much more beneficial. Besides that, the use of infographics can help students comprehend difficult concepts while adding some color and life to an otherwise dull topic and/or theory.

With the ability to create posters of infographics using Block Posters and/or having the capability of examining the details of infographics utilizing tools like Zoom.it, adding this instructional strategy to your teacher toolbox is really a no-brainer!
